There not gone. All those emergency repair experiences of WW2 were documented by the Army in Special Text No. 12, "Emergency Repairs of Automotive Vehicles" for student instruction. The booklet covers everything from blown head gaskets, broken distributor rotors, bent axle housings and many other emergencies and how to fix them. Very interesting reading.
