i was taught by oskosh to shock the hubs on all drive axles when assembling on the spindles, i used a 4x4 and a 10 lb sledge hammer and would hit the hub a couple times and recheck bearing preload, never had a problem. ive done similar with smaller tools on t-cases and other bearing assemblies too.
