I got really lucky. I worked at a place in El Paso, and they had two Power Wagons - a '48 and a '49. My boss (the owner) had gotten them, and 4 or 5 old 40's Jeeps, in exchange for some work he (the company) had done for the El Paso Catholic diocese, many years prior. I had never seen them run or driven. They were just sitting in the dirt yard behind one of the buildings. One day, after I'd been there for about 4 years, I asked him what he planned to do with them, and he said he was probably going to sell them soon. I told him I'd like a crack at one of them, and asked how much he might want. He said probably about $50, and when the time came, that's what he charged me. He even got one of his employees to do the legwork to get the TT&L paperwork. I paid him back, of course, and that cost more thank the truck ($120 or so).

The general manager was also interested in one of them, so we drew straws to see which truck went to which person. I got the '49. They were both rust-free, but mike had some significant dents. The '48 was missing the rear driveshaft and maybe other things. I don't know what condition his engine was in, but mine was made to run without much effort.

Again, I know I got lucky.
