I thought that same years ago. Now I am of the opinion the newer the better. Simple reason is that they have a much better chance of surviving an accident in a new vehicle. Think airbags, crush zone, auto braking and etc. I have had 2 of my 3 kids in serious accidents not survived. One was in a 58 Willys wagon and the other in a 2006 CRV. My daughter was in a head on in her CRV that crushed the hood back to the windshield on one side. She had significant injuries but recovered.
Bottom line old and slow is not necessarily better.
