Agreed with everything you've mentioned.
One other factor is incredibly frustrating is the old rubber compounds they used in WWII and for years after. If not touched and weathered for a few decades it "welds" itself to the steel. You don't want little children around when you're trying to break the bead or turn the music up real loud.
