I am running a SM 420 in my Carryall. It was there when I got the truck. It is a great transmission. Tough as nails with the lowest granny first available. I actually like the SM 420 better than the NP 420 which I am running in my PW. It’s quieter and is better shifting. Both are essentially a 3 speed transmission as you normally don’t start out in 1st gear in either.

I had my SM 420 rebuilt when I did the Carryall. At the time there was a shop in Seattle that worked on old stuff when I got it back they said they used a stronger case and all the internals were NOS from a gamma goat transmission. So all that was left of the one I gave them was the top. Not bad for $300 even back then. I have another spare SM 420 that I was going to use in a project but ended up using a T19 which is synchronized in all gears and has a higher 1st gear which is fine in a road truck.
