I started working on cars as the GM HEI ignition came out in 1974. I have serviced many i can say it was VERY dependable. Yes it does have a large distributor Cap. There are many options today. They make distributors to fit many types of engines. Good Luck with your choice They work very well with a mechanical fuel pump LOL
