On my WM300, I grab the hook end of the spring with a pair of large vice grips at 90 degrees to the line of the spring. Then I use both hands to pull the spring hook into the brake shoe hole. This gives me the lot of control over the spring. You can also use a piece of pipe or crow bar between the vice grips and the backing plate or brake shoe to guide the hook in.
