You didn't say how old the car is but two things come to mind. Out of adjustment or failing park neutral switch....try wiggling shifter next time during no crank condition.
Next most likely problem would be in the security / key system. Try to determine if his car has the security relay like the one linked below. A relay with contacts at the end of their life cycle is a likely culprit.
