I was in Fairbanks in late August or early September 1989. The weather was warm, but not too hot. I thought it was a nice city. We drove North to crack the Arctic Circle (just to be able to say we did it), about 160 miles away. After 80 miles, mostly on dirt/gravel (the pavement stopped about 10 miles out of town) that the semis treated like interstate, we stopped in Livengood Alaska (a thriving metropolis of a few dozen people), where we turned around and headed back to Fairbanks. A friend of mine used to go to Fairbanks at the summer solstice, for midnight baseball. The sun dips down to the horizon and then comes back up. It sounded like a lot of fun.
