I like to keep the truck as original as possible too. The 251 in my WM300 I like a little better then the 230 I had in my 1953 B4 Power Wagon.
I did upgrade the old point style voltage regulator to a solid state electronic one that looks like the old breaker point style. Battery stays nice and charged and the lights are nice and bright without any dimming or flickering at all.
