Yea, the car was probably used in town on short trips which really will carbon up and create a lot of sludge in the engine. You took it on the highway got the engine up to temperature for longer periods of time which allowed it to burn off and clean itself up. The filter caught a lot of the crud but running at temperature was probably the best thing for it.
