Craig, this sounds like a solid plan. Buy a first series bed and make both trucks whole. The floor cross members are not too hard to find, and as Scott mentioned, they are slightly different between the years. I don't know when they changed the length. I bought used ones from VPW for my 6x6 which has a 3rd series bed on it. I think I used the longer cross members on it.
