I completely rebuilt my instrument cluster… powder coated the panel disassembled the gauges to clean the glass, and replaced the voltage limiter and capacitor. Turns out, when I reassembled the gauges, I did not properly center the ammeter and one of the terminal posts was touching the back of the gauge causing a short. Unfortunately, this is a direct line from the battery so the damage was almost instantaneous.
I am now in the process of evaluating the damage. I fried the ground wire from the back of the panel to the tachometer bracket ground… that much I already know.
However, I expected to blow the fusible link between the battery and the ammeter but I still have 12 volts so I think I am good there. It also appears that my instrument cluster white ground wire survived so I am crossing my fingers and hoping the damage is limited to that ground wire. I plan to check resistance and continuity on all the instrument cluster wires just to be sure.
In the process of studying the wiring diagram (which I practically have memorized at this point), I kept seeing these labels on the wires and was curious what they are.
