The ammeter as used in vehicles with DC (direct current) is basically immune to voltage! (within the limits of it's insulation / construction) Thus it is designed to indicate relative electrical flow (or current, measured in Amperes 'Amps') It will not be harmed even with DC voltages as high as 24 volts! In fact, a 24V system DC ammeter will work fine on 1 volt or less! If it is a center zero type meter, (generally in all automotive applications) it will work equally as well with the leads attached in either polarity! So, do like Clint says, if you go from the original 6 volt POSITIVE ground to 12 volt NEGATIVE GROUND, just reverse the two wires on the ammeter. The place you will have trouble is the fuel guage, it is a resistive guage that feeds a balancing variable resistor in the tank, it will fry if 12 volts is place upon it!
You must install a 12-6 volt dropping resistor (can get at NAPA, etc.)in line and reverse polarity of the wires! Have fun!!
