The rear hubs run in High Temp Wheel bearing grease. The grease tends to become runny after a while so it looks like 90 weight. The smell should be different. Clean the hub and bearings well (the cleaner the better). Repack the hub and bearings. Install the inner bearing, add a bit more grease. Install the inner seal. Install the hub (they run better, longer, cooler and brake better if you use a dial indicator to set the runout). You can add a bit of grease before putting the outer bearing in but DO NOT fill the hub completely full. The hub should be only 1/2 - 3/4 full of grease - any more and the hub will leak.

The 90 weight oil will have a strong sulfer smell. The hubs have to be packed with grease. The hub lub does not come from the center The filler hole is below the fill level needed to get oil out to the axle ends.
Besides the ring gear flings the oil all over the inside of the pumpkin. The oil should never get to the hubs (unless the truck is on a good side hill which is why there is the out seal on many of the trucks).

Good luck - wheel bearing packers make the repacking alot quicker and less messy.
