NATO tread tires

I have seen pictures of NATO tread tires, but how exactly does the tread differ from a regular non-directional? How are they in snow and mud? The worst thing about my NDT's are that they don't self-clean in mud very well. Do the NATO tread tires self-clean? Also, it almost looks like the gaps in the NATO tread are tapered to the inside, kind of like a V, is this correct? I am trying to figure how to cut my Gama goat tires in the hope of getting some traction with them! Thanks for any and all ideas.
