If you live in the eastern half of the U.S., you can go to almost any country sawmill and buy "green" white oak cheaply in various thicknesses and widths. I usually get 1" thick for projects, and put it up in a dry space like an attic. I put sticks under and above the row of boards to ensure air circulation, and then weight the pile down with cinder blocks to keep it from warping while it dries. After three or four months, it is ready to be planed down and used. Most people finish it
with marine varnish.
