Biggest thing is to find out if it runs. Go back with the following items:
1) Small ratchet set with spark plug socket.
2) can of gasoline W/ 5' of rubber fuel line and a hand primer pump. (little squeeze bulb used on outboard motors)
3) can of starting fluid
4) can of WD-40 with the little red tube
5) 1/2" and 9/16" brake line wrenches (look like a crows foot)
6) short piece of steel fuel line to put on inlet side of fuel pump
7) a few lengeths of electrical wire with alligator clips on each end.
8) 12 volt battery and jumper cables
9) standard junkyard kit of screwdrivers, vise grips, wrenches, emery cloth, etc...
10) CASH... To close the deal right then and there!
Pull the spark plugs one at a time. be carefull not to let any of the dirt that is around the base of the plug hole fall into the bore. Put a heathy squirt of WD-40 in each piston bore. Clean the plugs with emery clotn and replace them.
Dont bother with putting the gas in the tank, it's probably full of crud and the lines are plugged.
Pull the inlet line off the fuel pump, and install your short piece of fuel line and attach the rubber fuel line to that with clamps and run it into your gas can. Put the hand pump in line, close to the gas can. Prime the fuel system, be carefull not to flood the motor as the float may be stuck.
clean the cap and rotor contacts and make sure all the wires especially the coil wire are seated well. Make sure theres water or coolant in the radiator
Put your good 12 volt battery in.(If you have a hand crank, now would be a good time to get things turning without loading up the starter.) Squirt some starting fluid down the carb.
Back in the cab, turn the key on and see if the amp gauge wobbles a bit. If no key or no wobble you can jump the ignition with your aligator clips.
Now the moment of truth... pull the choke, cross your fingers, mash the starter.
I hope it fires off for you. If not, let the troubleshooting begin, and theres a barganing point.
This is just my quick and easy way of getting a motor started to check if it runs dosent run, knocks, whatever. Remember, it was parked for a reason, and these motors are notorious for breaking cranks.
I'd have to see pictures to tell you a fair price, and it also depends on who your dealing with. Find out if he would like to trade it for something you have. I had a fellow who refused to sell a PW and I offered him $2000 cash (no bed, not running). But when I told him I had a tandem axle utility trailer I'd trade, He jumped all over it. Straight across trade.
Good luck!!
