This sounds like a super clean way to get around the problem. I can not remember if I ever showed you how I made both fit in my '47. I removed the brackets from the surge tank and rewelded them higher on the tank. This lowered the tank to within 1/2 inch of the inner splash shield of the fender. No elbows needed, but I have to flex the one heater hose in order to view down into the tank. This modification messed up the originality of the surge tank, but it still looks nice.
