The way my 59 is wired is that the grounding lead of the horn is routed up the steering column to the horn button. When the button is pressed, it grounds the lead and the horn blows. The only way I could see this smoking is that the horn is bad (shorted) and causing excessive current to flow through the grounding lead/horn button. Try putting a new horn in place of the old one and retry. Also put a door mounted fire extingusher in the truck. My cousin just lost his truck because it took the fire department 30 minutes to respond over the holidays. Truck burnt to the ground.
