I learned a trick way back in the mid 1970's from some hard core 4-wheelers before I even owned a vehicle. They would use the winch for a pull and, instead of winding the slack cable back onto the drum, they would just wrap it in a figure 8 tightly around the front bumper. Back then, these were usually heavy straight pipe bumpers. I have used the method ever since and the Power-Wagon split bumper is perfectly designed for this. Doing so saves time when you need to use the winch again and it keeps the remaining cable on the drum relatively tight.

Of course most people who see this at first think I have a broken winch. But, it is all part of the bigger plan.

Another trick I have successfully used is before entering a deep mud hole, first unwind enough cable from the front winch to thread it under the truck and hook to the rear bumper. I had one truck that was lifted enough that it was easy to run the cable "over" the axle housings and I had a large roller under the front pipe bumper very similar to the front roller on a half-track. The cable was always within easy reach if I needed to pull myself backwards, and the location of the cable above the axles, and the large front roller, kept the cable and the rest of the truck in good shape.
