If you're thinking of sliding the trans back, you probably should just remove it to install the PTO. You need to adjust the PTO for proper tooth backlash, so you don't have gear mesh to tight or to loose, gaskets come in several thicknesses to do this. See PIF 38711 transmission disassembly/reassembly for installing the PTO. Adjustment is .003 to .008 thousandths.
