The little bit of info I've seen on rear axle housings says that that they are made of something like 1050 steel. A steel with this much carbon is pretty highly hardenable. When you weld it, the heat will be pulled away from the weld area by the rest of the surrounding metal, and the welded area will become hard and brittle. If you decide to weld it, you should probably pre-heat and post-heat to several hundred degrees. I'm not a metallurgist, but this kind of thing is what crosses my mind.
