Hole in back of heater box, '71 Power Wagon

Greetings,


I pulled the heater box to rebuild the core and replace the coolant valve and noticed someone has taped cardboard over this whole in the back of the box.

This hole looks to be original (or very well cut) but I don't know what it is for. I checked the parts illustration manual and it doesn't show that view.

The box sits right up against the firewall but there is no corresponding hole in the firewall

Anyone know what the purpose of this is?
