Hi Bill,
Here’s how I do new shoes.
First, always have the shoes ground for each drum. I have never concerned myself on the drum measurement...just take your drums in & have the shoes relined for each drum with whatever thickness lining that’s required. If the drums have been turned oversize...just use oversize lining. Any good commercial brake shop can do it...I’m sure you deal with them & then don’t mix up the shoes/drums...you know all this.
Next, install the shoes/drums with the shoe cams turned in to allow the most clearance.
Adjust the lower cam bolts so the lower heal of the shoes have .010” clearance between the heel of the shoe & the drum through the inspection hole. Do both lower cam bolts. Now adjust the top cam adjusters so the top of the shoe has .010” clearance. No need to check the middle...if the shoes were arc’d then the middle will be .010”.2
Now I go back to the heel...check & adjust again. Now go to the top & I adjust until the shoes just start to contact when the drum is rotated.
Voila! You’re ready to move onto wheel #2
Good luck & Happy New Year to the Dodge Boys!
