You should be able to find a good PTO winch for a decent price. Do you have the PTO on the trans? I would leave the 12v winch alone and not worry about it. Especially if it is temporary and or seldom used. I know a lot of guys have therories about running inverters to step back down to 12 from 24V. However, I have never had an issue just simply coming off one battery for 12v power. We tap multi cell batteries for different voltages all the time without any problems. I would run nothing less than a 12,000lb electric winch on an M37. I run a 9000lb warn on my Jeep (shh don't tell anyone I have one of those). I burried the thing last winter and it struggled to get me out.

NOTHING beats a PTO Winch pound for pound rated.
