Bronze ring gears seem to be common on ring and worm gear systems. I've got an antique ATV that uses ring and worm gears in it's drive system. The wire drawing machines in the company I used to work for had several "Bull Block" heavy duty drawing machines that had huge ring and worm gears. All of them used Bronze ring gears (and all had to be carefully shimmed for proper alignment and used a special lube compatible with the bronze gears).
