Make sure the pinion shaft nut is removed.

I cut a short length of steel pipe and drilled a 5/16 hole thru the center.

Remove the u-joint, but put the u-joint bearing cap straps on with the bolts tightened.

With the u joint retainer straps installed, slide the pipe thru the yoke with the hole centered directly behind the exposed pinion shaft. Put a bolt thru the hole in the pipe and screw a nut on the bolt threads between the pipe and the end of the pinion shaft. Use the nut to force the bolt against the pinion shaft which will push the pinion yoke away from the pinion shaft.

If you feel like you have a lot of pressure against the shaft, but the yoke wont come loose, it helps to tap around the side of the yoke with a hammer to help break it loose under pressure.
