It shouldn’t. Turn on the ignition and read the voltage at the input terminal to the coil. That will tell you of the problem is before the coil which eliminates quite a bit of checking. If you have voltage there then check the coil and distributor. Clean the points. Also check the wire from the coil to the distributor as they can short out where it goes through the distributor base.
