The wider 6 lug rear axle is a different axle housing. The tubes are 2 1/2" longer on each side, which makes the housing 5" wider between the backing plates.
Single wheels are obviously a different offset than dually wheels. You can run a dually wheel as a single, which all trucks do on the front axle of a DRW truck. But you cannot use 2 single wheels together - the rims won't bolt together.
Those "adaptors" shown below are NOT "adaptors"!!! They are SRW HUBS, a completely different casting that places the SRW further away from the backing plate. They do however, use the same brake drums as the DRW hub. If they were an "adaptor" they would bolt to the DRW hub, which they do not. Yes, they are hard to find. Ive had 2 trucks with them and sold both sets.
As I stated above, the 8 lug trucks use a different hub on the front axle, rather than changing the rear axle hubs. With DRW's, the front hub has to mount the wheel further out due to the greater offset of the dual wheels. Otherwise, front and rear wheels would not be the same.
Does anybody have a 69-71 factory 8 lug dually 9' bed truck? I have not yet found the answer to whether there was a wider 8 lug rear axle.
