I took my head light switch apart. It does not have a release button to release the push pull rod. The knob is a push-on with an internal gripper to the shaft. A small slotted hole on the underside of the knob allows me to slip in a very small point tool to release the grip on the shaft. Then Eric’s tool will fit the two slots to back the nut out. With the rod in the way a screwdriver will not work. I took this switch all the way down to nothing so I am sure of what I am stating.
