After using my winch, I have a dead weight drag that I attach to the cable and rewind to about 15 feet from the winch, then I stop the engine and rewind the remainder manually turning the drum with my hands while applying pressure to the cable with my foot. I do this for safety. It's a tiring task to do it manually for the short distance, it’s better than being caught in the winch. You can spool the cable manually and if you’re spooling 150 feet or more, just do it with periodic rest periods if you’re not able to do it all at once. Once you get the PTO connected, respool for tighter fit.
