The clear will hold up extremely well so long as they soaked it with a real thin coat to start with. The key is for the finish to soak in. If it’s sitting on the surface it will eventually peel.
I’ve been doing the same with black urethane for years but it’s the same thing. Black sprayed on like on metal will not hold up. Black thinned like 50/50 with xzene, then next coat thinned 25%...then next coat no thinner. Holds up for 25 years in the salt water :)
