Although you don't want either to break I would rather break the chain than the cable or the shear pin. Easier to replace. But if you are looking for exact replacement, the factory was probably staying with the shear pin for the weak link.
I have an original chain and hook and it's 7/16". It looks like the one on Todd's page. The cable is new, but replaced original 7/16".
The problem with new chain is it's almost always treated with some shiny, supposedly rust proofing, and almost always imported.
