Thanks for the long note and potential issues to look for and possible solutions.

Well I guess it could be described as “rolling” I really don’t think I’m capturing this sound on my phone as badly as it really sounds in operation.

It’s more of a “grrrrrrrrrring”

“could it be possible that the input bearing has a flaw in one or more of the rollers? “

Possible. And that’s something I’ll look MUCH closer at when I pull this tranny out again

“Any vibration in the transmission will be amplified by the shifter”

Well I can’t see this as an issue?? I mean I can hold my hand on it, take away any and all floor boards around it, nothing. So i doubt this is a place to look

“Similar to above, are all of the bushings supporting the power train properly assembled? Is there anywhere that could be metal on metal allowing vibration to pass? Did you use any poly or hard rubber bushings?”

No.. all my body and drivetrain bushing new rubber.

“ Break in... maybe the new/used parts need some time to break in? Keep a real close eye on oil condition for any signs of pending doom.....”

Funny thing, I’ve changed gear lube many times trying different weight oils. Each time I’m getting a few specks or flakes of both ferrous metal as well as brass shavings.

I seen a few bigger than a pencil lead ferrous “chips” the last time, not filings.. bigger..so I know I got some gear to gear contact, or gear to housing contact going on.

The brass can ONLY be the reverse idler gear bushing.
That is NOT in operation when truck running in nuetral
Still those larger than simple metal filings are disturbing enough to drop this tranny

At first I though they were a result of my careless shifting and grinding gears, but that cannot be. I actually can double clutch, albeit I may get a slight “chirp” sometimes!!

5) Release bearing?

Naw. Been replaced... twice!!

“Is there possibly an oil slinger missing on the input side? “

Possible. But highly unlikely. I got a bone stock, never torn into “crusty” tranny I have to reference things too.

Thus transmission I have in the truck appears to have been rebuilt correctly

“Try overfilling the tranny through the shifter tower and see if there is any change?”

Tried it!! Thought it would “mask” the noise enough to make me feel comfortable. Didn’t work.

“figure out of there is actually any damage occurring and if not, drive it”

Agreed. I have to assume that something is just not right in there. It may have been easy to discount this as me being overly crazy about the noise, but after seeing those metal “chips” larger than a filing size, I really gotta get in there and look around
