Jim,
I feel your pain! On my 57 W100, I have an NOS gauge and an aftermarket sender that is supposed to match. First one was flakey, bought another one which worked from full to about a quarter tank and never lower. I tried various adjustments but could never change it. I ended up using one of the senders and a matching gauge, designed for an aircraft. I figure it is even more important to have an accurate fuel gauge in a plane, right? I installed the gauge inside my glove box so as not to be cutting holes in the dash. It works much better but is susceptible to sloshing, causing the gauge to fluctuate sometimes. All said, it is much better than anything else I was able to accomplish.
