My father (1893-1984) said that a favorite trick for coping with vapor lock "back in the day" was to carry a grapefruit. Once the vapor lock set in, he'd mash 1/2 of it down over the fuel pump. That would cool the fuel pump enough to get things going again. I drove his 1936 LaSalle (4-door, straight eight) in high school. He told me about the trick, but fortunately I never had occasion to try it.
