Yes the brakes on the WC and PW can be made to work well. However, if you repower and travel at 60MPH plus they won’t cut it. You can get one decent stop from 60. The second stop is worse and after that you ain’t going to stop until you hit the car in front of you. It’s called brake fade which is a characteristic of drum brakes. Noting you can do about it.

I blew a stop light in my PW with original brakes. I had about a yard of gravel in the bed and was under 9500#. I was comiydowna slight hill and the light turned red. I had lot of room to stop.but it never happened until the far side of the intersection. The brakes started out fine the they faded like I could not believe. Front disks went on just after that.
