I'm about to do the same swap myself for the same reason, I need better brakes. The axle swap itself is just a nuts and bolts thing. I bought a '77 rolling chassis complete with steering box, master cylinder, and brake proportioning valve. The disk brake master cylinder and proportioning valve are different from the drum brake trucks so they do need to be changed. The steering box and pitman arm may be different from yours as Dodge changed that somewhere around '78.

You might also be able to swap the disk brakes from the '78 axle to the '74 axle. I believe the brakes, spindles, and outer axle shafts have to be swapped to do that.
