Per the other replies, coolers are a good idea if they are set up right. There should be be some trick stuff for VW air-cooled engines?
Just make sure the location and plumbing don’t introduce risk of leaks if damaged. The people that owned my 4x4 van put in an extra transmission cooler, but the plumbing and mounted location are vulnerable. So I need figure out a better spot for it.
