You can use this site to determine your vehicles safe towing capacity. Check with your State Laws regarding the type of of brake shoes required for 1 ton. CA says shoes must be riveted. If you're not in compliance could be an issue for you.
I've also seen farmers in the San Joaquin valley in CA tow D7 Cats on one axle trailers, with a 3/4 ton Dodge truck, not fast, bed on the axles, and steering capability very light, but they've done it.
