I debated a long time whether to drop a 4BT or a 318 into my 6x6. If I'd had a 4BT and NV4500 combo ready to go into the chassis I probably would have gone that route. They have great fuel economy and unbeatable sex appeal. But I didn't have one and I ended up going with the 318, and I've been very happy with it. Here's a few reasons why, in no particular order:
- It has more RPM flexibility than the diesel
- There are fewer cold weather starting and driving issues
- It has more torque than a stock 4BT
- It idles much quieter than a diesel
- It weighs 225 lbs less than the diesel
- It was much easier to get the PTO winch connected
- I didn't have to relocate or replace the transfer case
- It cost $8000 less than the diesel to install

You may not have to deal with some of these issues, but they were all factors for me in deciding which way to go. If you can make the diesel fit and work easily, I think you will be very happy with it.
