Have you checked your timing . TDC on compression on number one with a dial gauge or similar , and see how your timing marks line up . It wouldn’t be the first time someone has had the pointer on the timing cover in the wrong place . It sounds like it could be over advanced . Others have more knowledge than me on these engines , but 5 or 6’ BTDC should run fine I would have thought
