I hope he can come back to work. My mom and dad live right next to my garage. He hardly has interest in my car projects because he doesn't understand them anymore and he is the guy who taught me to rebuild an engine. Both of them keep me from letting the place get to untidy. My mom will walk outside without shoes or socks and walks into the garage commenting how much stuff is in there. I don't want her to step on a loose tool or metal shaving,etc. Sounds like your dad needs his place to be needed.
