The replacement went really well. A friend of mine had an axle from a WC53 and I pulled the 3rd member out of that. Rinsed it our with a bunch of diesel oil popped it in, went for a test drive and.. Left a trail of gasoline all around the block.
Pulled carb. checked valve, seemed fine, slept on it. Bought new fuel pump (finally, old one was flaky) No better. Pulled the carb apart again.. Found the float had sunk.
Luckily I had a spare carb to pull out a new float.
With that fixed we packed up an went on a camping trip to test everything out. The new 3rd member was WONDERFUL! Finally I can drive this thing, even when hot, and it just makes a soft whining sound. I was able to cruise at > 45 mph! Unbelievable!
After a couple days of camping an exploring we headed home. About 1/2 way home we pull over to let some cars go by. I put it back into gear, let out the clutch and.. Nothing but a light grinding noise. We were both "OMG NO! NOT AGAIN!!"
And again the truck got the "Tow of shame" home.
Turns out the inside plate thing in the clutch disk shattered. But it took me a couple weeks to be able to get well and go pull the *#&%^% thing apart.
