There is a small button you push while pulling the rod out. It is held in by the small grove on the end of the rod. It is not the porcelain white ring and spring insulator that is for the dimmer mech. Think where the end grove would be inside and switch and look for the silver circle looking button. Push and pull. Some can be hard so work it in and out while pushing the release button hard. Cheers
