installed the carb with 1 gasket on either side of the 1/2 fiber spacer using the copper gasket sealer I saw in several other posts. The freeze plugs are replaced and/or re-flattened with the 3/4 flat end of a ball peen hammer. Removed the original, cruddy starter and cleaned it. Installed some bling in the form of a military dipstick still olive drab (it is a T245) Ready to start again and get the timing and carb set right and get it out on the road.
