Actually, dimpling it in the middle is the start of the process to remove the plug.

What you need to do is start to flatten the plug over the entire face.

If you go to a freeze plug manufacturer to see their recommended tool, you will understand what is needed.

The actual freeze plug tool is a cylinder of steel almost the diameter of the plug. The part of the tool that meets the face of the plug has a shallow concave machined in it. This allows you to drive the freeze plug over the face without totally flattening it.
