I’d check valve springs and keepers visually before pulling the head. Suspicious that this followed shortly after valve adjustment.
I lost the top of a valve once and it went through a piston, in my first WC- it clattered some and didn’t run right, I was really surprised when I pulled the head and saw all the carnage.
